Fishing/Hunting Report

Inland Lakes & Streams May 16, 2008
Inland reports have been so-so because of the ice cold water and late ice out. WALLEYE are right up on the shorelines spawning, and not biting too well. PANFISHermen are still using tiny ice jig type lures under bobbers, and doing OK in mid-depth waters. NORTHERN and BASS fishing has been somewhat slow with the cold water temps. We need a week of sun and 60 degree weather to kick off a good inland bite.

STEELHEAD fishing probably peaked last week with nice catches and more big legal fish coming in for the taxidermist than in several years. Still a few fish in the rivers, both up and downrunners. Expect a few STEELIES in the rivers thru the end of the month, especially after any rains. STREAM TROUT fishing has been decent too. Flies, bait, and even spinners have been catching some nice resident BROWNS, BROOKIES, and baby STEELHEAD.

Lake Superior May 16, 2008
Lake Superior trollers have been fishing mainly north of Washburn, when the wind has let them get out. Reports have been somewhat spotty with the cold weather, muddy water, and predominantly NE winds. A few big BROWNS, SPLAKE, COHO and STEELHEAD have been caught. Finding the lines and seams of clear water has been key for getting bit, as well as targeting shallow rocks on sunny days where you will find the warmest water. Don't be afraid to fish really shallow this time of year! Not many people downrigging for LAKERS, there’s been reports of excellent action away from the planer board crowds! In the Bay, there have been some boats fishing in and around the Hot Pond, reporting a few nice sized WALLEYE, NORTHERN and even some BASS. BASS in the sloughs are there, but sluggish and fishing has been somewhat slow. Slowly twitched jerkbaits, and slow crawled plastics are your best bet until the water warms up some.

SMALLMOUTH FISHERMEN: Please be aware of the new regulations. All bass fishermen must use barbless hooks on all lures, and no live bait until the BASS season opens for catch and keep on June 21st.
